Shiraz Red Wine
Australian Shiraz is normally thought of being just an average Red Wine, but it has shown recently that it can produce some of the world's finest and darkest Red Wines with intense flavors and excellent ability for cellaring. The Australians first started planting syrah in the middle of the 19th century, and it was considered to be sort of a workhorse grape, much as Californians regarded the zinfandel grape variety. It used to be produced as an inexpensive, yet flavorful wine that was good for everyday drinking. Yet, as the Australian wine industry became more sophisticated, many wineries became intent on producing better Red Wines that could compete with proven Red Wine regions such as Italy and France. Shiraz became very classy in some places, and Shiraz Red Wine emerged as the country's greatest expression of wine making.
